Hi Cozy Readers,
This post is coming to you a little later than planned, as I've been feeling the weight of our collective anxiety, fear, and heartbreak. But perhaps this is actually a perfect moment to announce our next pick for the Cozy Magical Book Club: Mort by Terry Pratchett.
Mort is a whimsical, thought-provoking "Death-Takes-a-Holiday" story, set in Pratchett’s iconic fantasy world, Discworld. If you’re new to Pratchett, Discworld is a richly imaginative universe where his stories unfold. His writing is both charming and witty, blending satirical humor with cultural critique in a way that’s sometimes absurd, often surprising, and always enjoyable.
One moment you’re lost in his magical worlds, and the next, a line hits you with a sharp, unexpected insight. His books are funny, his characters lovable, and his narratives layered with clever reflections on life and society.
For anyone who hasn’t read a Discworld novel before, here’s a tip: you don’t need to start with book one. Discworld isn’t a typical series but more of a world filled with interconnected sub-series and standalone adventures. Mort is one of these and works wonderfully as an introduction.
As the days grow darker (both in daylight and, sometimes, in spirit), Mort feels like just the right book to sink into—a blend of escapism and reflection on life, death, and love. And, if you enjoy audiobooks, I highly recommend this one. The narration is fantastic and brings Pratchett’s humor and characters to life.
If you’d like to join us for the discussion, we’re meeting on Zoom on Tuesday, November 19, at 5:30 PM Pacific Time. I’ll send the Zoom link out one hour before the gathering. All Sleuth Hero Alien subscribers are welcome!
